Women’s History Month

Women's History

Women’s History Month started as a week-long celebration in 1978 in Santa Rosa, California and “spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations.” It became a national celebration in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress passed a law that designated March as Women’s History Month. Every year, the National Women’s History Alliance sets a theme for the month. This year’s theme is “Leading the Change: Women for a Sustainable Future.”
